He raised the bar with his risque role in the movie Delhi Belly (DB) and showed audiences his wry humour and that he's quite the kisser.
Now, actor Imran Khan is taking a leap from the intrepid journalist in DB, to a small-town boy who falls for his brother's bride in his next, Mere Brother Ki Dulhan (MBKD).
However, making the transition wasn't easy, admits Imran. "Initially, I had doubts about whether I was making the right choice, but I loved the way director Ali Abbas Zafar pitched the film. It is heavily inspired by the director's life. He is a Dehradun boy and won't compromise on his morals," he says, adding, "MBKD is not like DB. While DB was underplayed, MBKD is loud. The style of humour is different."
But what appealed to Imran was being cast in a different avatar. "I'm an introvert and this movie is in a very desi setting. I had to come out of my shell for the film," he says.
Besides the song Dhunki from the film, which is hot on the charts, Imran has reportedly been lauding co-star Kat's acting prowess. "I said that this film will prove she's not just a pretty face. This is her best performance so far. She is very impressive in the film," he says.
His first impression of Kat, though, was that she's "very reserved and shy." "One has to spend time with her to know her better. Once you get to know her, you find that she's a cool person to hang out with," reveals Imran.
Meanwhile, MBKD has drawn comparisons with the 1975 Dharmendra-Amitabh Bachchan starrer Chupke Chupke. Dismissing these rumours, Imran says, "These rumours have probably surfaced because the director is inspired by films from that era."
What about reports that Imran lobbied for Pakistani actor Ali Zafar to be a part of the film? "I tried to get a good actor for a crucial role and Ali made the character very likeable," he explains. "Actually, it was the director's idea to bring Ali on-board. He is a charming guy and a lot of fun to work with," he adds.
So, did he consult Aamir Khan about his role in this film? "I don't consult Aamir about the roles I do," he signs off.
